Implemented in 1983, the New York Bottle Bill has been the state's most successful recycling program for over 40 years. Taking litter from our streets, parks and waterways and turning it into cash for consumers. This system has provided a vital financial resource to many, provided jobs across the entire state and kept New York communities clean along the way.

New York's Bottle Bill is in dire need of an update.
The last update was passed in 2009. |
Due to a stagnant handling fee, redemption centers have been closing at a rapid rate. New York lost over 100 redemption centers in the last year alone. This is causing loss of small businesses, significant job loss and is contributing to increased litter in many communities.
|
States like Maine, Connecticut, Iowa and California updated their bottle bills in 2023. Other states are introducing legislation to add a bottle bill to their states that do not currently have one. New York is falling behind when it comes to the bottle redemption system.
